Language Impairment

Specific Language Impairment

Specific language impairment is where the normal pattern of language development is not being followed. This is much less common than language delay and requires intensive, specialist therapy over time. Ideally, Specific Language Impairment (SLI) will be dealt with by specially organised units within the NHS/Education system, as all aspects of learning will be affected. SLI is unlikely to improve without intervention.

Small Talk Therapists can offer assessment of the problem with therapy or back- up sessions to support the NHS Therapy. It is quite common for NHS Therapists and independent ones to work together and there is a protocol, which is followed. Often the Speech and Language Therapy Assistant will provide the actual therapy sessions with supervision/support from either of the Therapists.
